Ploughshares Fund Supports the Continuation of the Iran Nuclear Talks

November 24, 2014

Washington, DC – In response to the announcement today extending talks with Iran, Joe Cirincione, President of Ploughshares Fund, a global security foundation, issued the following statement:

“These talks are an historic opportunity to prevent an Iranian nuclear bomb and prevent another war in the Middle East. Diplomacy is working. Under the interim agreement, Iran froze and rolled back its nuclear activities. Under the extension, Iran’s nuclear program remains frozen. That’s a win for the US and our allies.”

“Diplomacy is the only way to achieve a lasting solution to the Iran nuclear crisis. Our negotiators have labored many months to get to a final deal, and they are very close. We should support their efforts. We must give diplomacy a chance. There is no viable alternative.”

Philip Yun, Executive Director of Ploughshares Fund, issued the following statement:

“Inspectors on the ground in Iran have given us valuable insight into Iran’s nuclear activities. Without negotiations, and without an agreement, we lose that insight. Iran would unfreeze its nuclear program, putting us on a path toward yet another military conflict in the Middle East.”

“After more than a decade of war, Americans strongly oppose the prospect of having US troops return to the region and put unnecessarily in harm’s way. We instead should explore every opportunity to let diplomacy work.”
