3 women preventing nuclear war

The Ploughshares Fund Women’s Initiative

$1 Million Campaign

The Ploughshares Fund Womens Initiative works to increase the voices and roles of women in national security and to ensure their ability to craft and influence US nuclear policy. Today, 13,500 nuclear weapons rest in the hands of a few powerful men who have unchecked authority to use them. But we dont have to tolerate living under the constant threat of instant annihilation.

GIVE TO THE WOMEN'S INITIATIVE

Women make up half the population yet make up less than 20 per cent of those who determine our nuclear policies and therefore the future of our planet. We have launched a $1 million-dollar campaign to ensure that more women are included at the peace and security table.

We invite you to support women creating a safer and saner future.  Give to Ploughshares Fund today and your gift will be doubled — thanks to the generosity of a donor who is matching the next $50,000 raised towards the Women's Initiative in 2020!

Donations from this page will be dedicated to the Ploughshares Fund Women’s Initiative.

Now is the time to challenge the underlying assumptions, structural bias and gendered narratives that keep dangerous nuclear weapons and policies in place. We have the opportunity to develop a bold, brave platform that redefines security, prioritizes non-military solutions to conflict, and invests in real human needs, not nuclear weapons.

The Ploughshares Fund Women's Initiative $1 Million Campaign

Our grantmaking and programmatic activities will equip more women, both emerging and established leaders, with the resources, support and networks they need to help create a world in which nuclear weapons can never be used again.

How will Ploughshares Fund use the $1 Million?

  • Provide grants to existing and emerging women national security leaders and women-led organizations.
  • Promote and network these diverse leaders and women-led organizations to advance an inclusive national security agenda.
  • Merge the cause of nuclear disarmament with other civil society movements, including climate change, social justice and health care.

How do we know we can do this?

We have made tremendous progress in just two short years. Internally, we have put our money where our values are, ensuring that we have gender parity on our staff and board and in our grantmaking, with at least 50 percent of our total grants going to women-led projects. We have funded dozens of the smartest women with the best new ideas that are fostering more just and inclusive nuclear policies.

Major successes include funding a nuclear/arms control Gender Scorecard for presidential candidates  produced by Women In International Security; supporting Women of Color Advancing Peace, Security and Conflict Transformation to promote diversity in the security and nonproliferation fields; and publication of a visionary report by 11 national security experts that dives deeply into the heart of US security concerns: A New Vision: Gender. Justice. National Security.

Most significantly, we have funded the creation of a new network, Gender Champions in Nuclear Policy to encourage leading organizations to institutionalize gender equity in their operations and practices. Headquartered in the Nuclear Threat Initiative, the network extends to more than 50 organizations, including major foundations such as the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, key research institutions such as the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and, now, two nuclear laboratories, the Los Alamos National Laboratories and the Idaho National Laboratory.

As with all our donations, 100% of your contribution will go toward grantmaking and programmatic activities with nothing subtracted for administrative or fundraising expenses.
