Ten years after Hiroshima, twelve-year-old Sadako Sasaki was in the hospital with terminal leukemia as a result of the bombing. Remembering an old Japanese legend, she set out on a quest to fold 1,000 paper crane, believing that it would grant her wish for life and peace.
Although she died before finishing the full 1,000 crane, her hope in the face of death inspired everyone around her. Today thousands bring paper cranes to her memorial, the Children's Peace Monument in Hiroshima, to honor the vision of a peaceful world without nuclear weapons.
