Karin von Hippel [2] of the Post-Conflict Reconstruction Project [3]at CSIS is on the ground in Afghanistan, watching as that country's people go to the polls.
She wrote last week [4] that "no matter who wins the August 20 elections, the results will be considered a positive step for Afghanistan if they are perceived as mostly free and fair," although she cautions that most analysts expect some fraud and security problems. Her colleague Rick Barton [5] told Fox News [6] this morning, when asked what he expects will occur today, "I expect almost everything to happen...This is a chance for the people to make their country safe and free of corruption."
