Rep. Ellen Tauscher [2](D-Calif.) was appointed undersecretary of state for arms control and international security, heralding a return to negotiated disarmament accords and strengthened international norms on nuclear proliferation. Tauscher is widely respected for her longtime interest in disarmament and nonproliferation issues. The highly regarded Robert Einhorn [3]of Ploughshares-funded Center for Strategic and International Studies [4]was slated to get the job, but reportedly asked to be removed from consideration for personal reasons.
