President Jimmy Carter [2], former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev [3], Bishop Desmond Tutu [4] this week launched a campaign calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons. The campaign, Global Zero [5], received early support from Ploughshares Fund. Meeting today in Paris, 100 past and current world leaders signed a declaration imploring the U.S. and Russia to slash their nuclear arsenals and for a worldwide verification and enforcement system and a phased reduction leading to elimination of all nuclear stockpiles. Ploughshares Fund President Joseph Cirincione [6] attended the launch where he moderated a panel that included Queen Noor [7], Margaret Beckett, [8] Richard Branson [9] and others.
