J. Michael McQuade

J. Michael McQuade serves as Special Advisor to the President of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), where he offers strategic counsel on the university's research endeavors and advocates for the importance of science, technology, and innovation on both national and global scales. Previously, from 2019 to 2021, he held the role of Vice President for Research at CMU, collaborating closely with academic leaders and faculty to propel forward cutting- edge research initiatives across the institution. During this time, he also spearheaded efforts to forge new partnerships while nurturing existing relationships with federal agencies, industry partners, and foundations.

Before his tenure at CMU, Dr. McQuade spent over a decade at United Technologies Corporation, serving as Senior Vice President for Science & Technology. In this capacity, he provided strategic oversight for research, engineering, and development endeavors across various business units, focusing on innovative solutions for the global aerospace and building systems industries. Prior to UTC, Dr. McQuade held senior roles at 3M, Imation, and Eastman Kodak, where he accrued extensive experience in technology development and business leadership, particularly in the realms of healthcare imaging and industrial innovation.

His academic background includes a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in physics from Carnegie Mellon University, with his doctoral research conducted at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory focusing on charm quark production in experimental high-energy physics.

Additionally, Dr. McQuade has contributed his expertise serving government advisory boards, including the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board, and the Defense Innovation Board.
