Ploughshares Fund Welcomes Tom Z. Collina as Director of Policy
Ploughshares Fund, a global security foundation, today announced the appointment of Tom Z. Collina as Director of Policy. Collina will be leading Ploughshares Fund efforts to advocate for smarter spending on nuclear weapons and encouraging more appropriate policies toward global nuclear issues including negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, arms control efforts with Russia and easing nuclear risks in Pakistan and North Korea.
“We are very lucky to get someone with as much experience in the field as Tom,” said Joe Cirincione, President of Ploughshares Fund. “His deep understanding of national security policy -- and politics -- makes him a natural fit to take our focused policy efforts to a new level.”
Collina has 25 years of Washington DC experience in nuclear weapons, missile defense, and nonproliferation issues, and most recently served as Research Director of the Arms Control Association. He was the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Institute for Science and International Security and the Director of the Global Security Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, among other leadership positions. He has been directly involved with efforts to end U.S. nuclear testing, rationalize anti-missile programs, extend the Nonproliferation Treaty, and achieve the New START Treaty. He has published widely in major magazines and journals and has appeared frequently in the national media, including The New York Times, CNN, and NPR. He has testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and regularly briefs congressional staff.
“I’m thrilled to join Ploughshares Fund,” said Collina. “This organization has been highly effective at changing U.S. nuclear policy to make the United States and the world more secure, and I can’t wait to join the team.”
Collina will be available at Ploughshares Fund for regular comment on nuclear weapons policy, missile defense, and Iran and other nonproliferation issues, and can be followed on Twitter @tomcollina.
