Arms control: no longer just for men
“Ever been to an arms control meeting?”Joe Cirincione asks Politico. “It’s all old white guys.” The old boys' network is starting to change, with women leading some of the most critical arms control initiatives in the Obama Adminstration. (Many, including Rose Gottemoeller, chief negotiator for START, and Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins -- pictured here -- are former grantees and colleagues of Ploughshares Fund.) U.S. teams in charge of negotiating START, strengthening the nuclear nonproliferation regime and locking down loose nuclear material are led by women, under the supervision of Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Ellen Tauscher and, ultimately, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
