A chance for a nuclear-free world

The meetings between Russian President Medvedev and President Obama focused on many issues besides nuclear disarmament, but none so important, according to Ambassadors James Collins and Jack Matlock in an article in Foreign Policy. “For the first time in many years, it seems likely that the United States and Russia will make dramatic moves toward fulfilling their Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) disarmament obligations.” They added, “If the two countries do not come to a strong and bold new agreement, then there will be no disarmament. Nor will there be any real chance to preserve and strengthen the NPT. It is that simple.” Ambassadors Collins and Matlock are signatories to the high- level bipartisan statement signed by three dozen top U.S. officials and experts on Russia, convened by the Ploughshares-funded Partnership for a Secure America.
