The Ploughshares Fund Women’s Initiative aims to invite and position women firmly at the peace and security table and to ensure their ability to craft and influence US nuclear policy and national security. Today, 14,000 nuclear weapons rest in the hands of a few powerful men who have unchecked authority to use them. But we don’t have to tolerate living under the threat of annihilation or false security.
Women make up half the population yet make up less than 20% of those who determine our nuclear policies and therefore the future of our planet. We recently launched a $1 million-dollar campaign to ensure that more women are included at the peace and security table and to support their ability to craft and influence US nuclear policy and national security.
Support women preventing nuclear war and creating a safer and saner nuclear policy. Give to Ploughshares Fund today and your gift will be doubled — thanks to the generosity of a donor who is matching the first $50,000 raised towards the Women's Initiative in 2020!
Now is the time to challenge the underlying assumptions, structural bias and gendered narratives that keep dangerous nuclear weapons and policies in place. We have the opportunity to develop a bold, brave platform that redefines security, prioritizes non-military solutions to conflict, and invests in real human needs, not nuclear weapons.
The Ploughshares Fund Women's Initiative $1 Million Campaign
With $1 million our grantmaking and programmatic activities will equip more women, both emerging and established leaders, with the resources, support and networks they need to help create a world in which nuclear weapons can never be used again.
How will Ploughshares Fund use the $1 Million?
- Challenge the national security establishment to consider and include outside perspectives and to diversify internally.
- Create an inclusive national security agenda that centers new, bold, brave alternatives to nuclear weapons.
- Chart new directions in the peace and security sector and merge the cause of nuclear disarmament with other civil society movements.
How do we know we can do this?
In just two short years Ploughshares Fund has already begun to correct the longstanding gender imbalance in the nuclear field. We’ve reached gender parity in our grantmaking, with 62% of our total grants going to women-led projects. We’re enriching the field with the smartest women and the best new ideas that are fostering more just and inclusive nuclear policies.
From Women In International Security producing a nuclear/arms control Gender Scorecard for presidential candidates, to Women of Color Advancing Peace, Security and Conflict Transformation, working to promote diversity in the security and nonproliferation fields; and from Ploughshares Fund’s production of a report by 11 national security experts that dives deeply into the heart of US security concerns: A New Vision: Gender. Justice. National Security., to the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize-winning coalition International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), working to prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons, with the support of the Women’s Initiative, women are democratizing—and claiming their place in—the nuclear space, a space that belongs to all of us. They are transforming thinking and advancing new and saner policies. Please consider joining us.
As with all our donations, 100% of your contribution will go toward grantmaking and programmatic activities with nothing subtracted for administrative or fundraising expenses.
