Special Tribute for a Lifetime of Leadership: William J. Perry, 19th US Secretary of Defense
From his early days in Silicon Valley pioneering technologies to understand the Soviet nuclear arsenal, to his years as Secretary of Defense (1994-1997), Sec. Perry has been a leader in assessing nuclear threats and their role in our security. In 2007, Sec. Perry, George Shultz, Sam Nunn, and Henry Kissinger published several editorials in the Wall Street Journal that laid out a vision for a world without nuclear weapons as well as the urgent, practical steps to get there. Their articles shook up the global policy establishment and fundamentally reframed the global debate on nuclear weapons. Sec. Perry remains one of the most outspoken advocates for reducing and eliminating nuclear weapons. He has dedicated his life and legacy to this mission.
Ambassador Wendy R. Sherman Former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs who led the US negotiating team that reached agreement on a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action between the P5+1, the European Union, and Iran for which, among other diplomatic accomplishments, she was awarded the National Security Medal by President Barack Obama.
Eric Schlosser Author and producer of Command & Control and Fast Food Nation and global advocate for reducing nuclear threats.
Ben Rhodes Former Deputy National Security Advisor and one of the leading voices in the Obama Administration working for the elimination of nuclear weapons.
Yasmeen Silva US Field Organizer for Beyond the Bomb who led the successful effort to have the San Francisco Board of Supervisors pass a resolution in support of the Markey-Lieu “Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act.”
