At Ploughshares Fund, advocating for and celebrating women at the peace and security table is part of who we are as an organization. Our founder, Sally Lilienthal, started Ploughshares Fund in the 1980s as a bold way of facing up to Cold War fears.
In a conversation that was — and remains — dominated by men, she shared a courageous vision of a future where nations are driven by respect for international law and cooperation rather than by fear of nuclear annihilation.
Today, Ploughshares Fund continues this work by building a nuclear policy field that is open to new and diverse perspectives. Our recently launched Women's Initiative aims to increase the role of voices working to reduce nuclear threats and to shine a light on the present and historic injustices in the field. This new initiative is an integral part of Ploughshares Fund's goal to place people, not weapons, at the center of security policy.
In the coming days we will be sharing stories and highlighting accomplishments of remarkable women such as Christine Ahn of Women Cross DMZ, Beatrice Fihn of International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (winner of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize) — and other Ploughshares Fund grantees. Both Ahn and Fihn are among the dozen authors featured in our newest report, A New Vision: Gender. Justice. National Security, to be released in April.
