During my time as a Ploughshares x Horizon 2045 Nuclear Futures Fellow, I spent one year mapping the footprint of nuclear weapons in our neighborhoods. I was left surprised, and encouraged.

I scoured the corners of the internet, from newspaper archives to university library collections, the personal websites of local activists to organizational histories. Through all of this reesearch, I’ve been asking myself two questions: how do I show my neighbors that the footprints of nuclear weapons track across our backyards? And, how can I help my neighbors care?

The result of this survey is the Neighbors Against Nukes map. This map is a one stop shop to learn (1) how nuclear weapons have impacted our own communities and (2) how to get involved in the fight against them.

Here’s what surprised me most while making this map:

  1. No region has been left untouched by nuclear weapons.
  2. No region has gone without activism against nuclear weapons.
  3. The tradition of activism provides lessons for us today.

I’ve written more about this project and its findings in a piece that you can access here, and I invite you to explore the Neighbors Against Nukes Map. Most of all, I hope you leave as encouraged as I did during this project.
