Afghanistan retrospective: Crisis Group in Kabul

Joanna Nathan of the Ploughshare-funded Crisis Group reflects on her experiences working in Afghanistan over the past five years. Nathan comments, “The situation in Afghanistan has obviously significantly deteriorated.” She chronicles the changes she's seen in the country since arriving in 2005, and observes that the situation on the ground has deteriorated in part because of the absence of a national strategy to counter the insurgency, and a lack of coordination between the international community and the Afghan government.  She adds, “There’s still a complete, almost complete, absence of a comprehensive national strategy to counter this insurgency.  You have individual nations, even individual agencies within the nations, all having their own plans, not coordinating with the Afghan government.” Listen to the full interview here.
