Battling over replacing nuclear warheads

While advocates of the Reliable Replacement Warhead program argue for funding, Hans Kristensen of the Ploughshares-funded Federation of American Scientists explains, "The administration argues that reliability issues will sooner or later affect existing warhead types, but RRW will have its own reliability issues as well. It is not a fix.” Stephen Young of the Union of Concerned Scientists, another Ploughshares grantee, says, “The bottom line is that the current U.S. arsenal is safe and reliable.” He added, “Even supporters of RRW acknowledge that current programs can maintain the arsenal.”
