Engaging Iran on Afghanistan

In testimony before the House of Representatives, Karim Sadjadpour of the Ploughshares-funded Carnegie Endowment for International Peace emphasized the importance of U.S.-Iran cooperation in Afghanistan.  Noting the two countries have similar strategic interests in Afghanistan’s future, Sadjadpour believes enagement on this issue could begin to resolve tensions, the main source of which is mistrust. He concluded, “U.S.-Iran cooperation in Afghanistan would be to the benefit of all three countries, just as U.S.-Iran antagonism the last several years has been to the detriment of all three.”
