Gareth Evans launches international nuclear commission

"For the last decade or so, the international community has been sleepwalking when it comes to this potential catastrophe," Gareth Evans, former Australian foreign minister, told reporters, speaking about the growing nuclear threat.  Evans, president of the Ploughshares-funded Crisis Group, is chair of a new international commission on nuclear proliferation convened by the Australian government. "The devastation that could be wreaked by one major nuclear weapons incident alone puts 9/11 and almost everything else (in) to the category of the insignificant," he said.
