Ploughshares Fund mourns the passing of Dr. Bruce Blair and extends our deepest condolences to his family. His unexpected death is an irreparable loss for our community and for global efforts to reduce the risk of nuclear war. Dr. Blair was a pioneer in the field, starting as a US Minuteman missile launch control officer and becoming a leading national voice calling for more rational nuclear policies. His vision of a world free of nuclear weapons within our lifetimes led to his co-founding Global Zero and growing it into an international movement that included former world leaders as well as the next generation. He was a mentor and friend to so many in this field, with whom he generously shared his expertise and wisdom.
“Bruce will be missed, but he will not be forgotten,” said Ploughshares Fund Policy Director Tom Collina, who worked with Dr. Blair for more than two decades. “Including his work as co-founder and president of Global Zero, Dr. Blair had been a Ploughshares Fund partner for more than 20 years. His passion lives on in the advocates and organizations that will carry out this work to eliminate nuclear weapons.”
We thank Dr. Blair for his lifelong commitment to building a safer world and for helping to set a clear course that we and our partner organizations will continue to follow.
