Scowcroft: New START Needs to Be Passed

Gen. Brent Scowcroft, who served as National Security Advisor to both Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, headlined a discussion of the New START treaty, co-hosted by the Arms Control Initiative at the Brookings Institution and the Arms Control Association - both Ploughshares grantees.  Speaking about the historical significance of New START, Gen. Scowcroft said the treaty "is vital if we are to continue the strategic arms control process with Russia."

Brookings President Strobe Talbott introduced the event.  Gen. Scowcroft's remarks were followed by an impressive panel discussion featuring Dr. Mort Halperin of the Open Society Institute, Amb. Steven Pifer of Brookings, Dr. Angela Stent of Georgetown University, and moderated by Daryl Kimball of the Arms Control Association.
