Stewardship of our nuclear arsenal

In an article for the Washington Times, Elizabeth Turpen of the Ploughshares-funded Stimson Center argues that “the U.S. is approaching a critical juncture with respect to ensuring effective stewardship of its nuclear arsenal.”  According to Turpen, the U.S. should establish a fully independent agency outside the Energy Department to shift the nuclear weapons complex away from nuclear arsenal and leverage the “investments in science and technology for government-wide national security.” Based on a recent Stimson Center study, Turpen concludes that the U.S. must use the “same scientific infrastructure [from the nuclear weapons complex] to address a burgeoning menu of national security challenges.”
