There is a very real possibility that President Trump is about to start a new war in the Middle East. In July, in a late-night tweet from the White House, President Trump threatened Iran, in all caps, with “CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED.” War with Iran would be a painful and pointless disaster—think Iraq War on steroids. It could cost trillions of dollars, kill thousands of people, and possibly bring back the draft. It would destabilize an already volatile region, drive the spread of nuclear weapons, and increase the risk of nuclear war.

As former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said, “an attack on Iran would, in my opinion, be a catastrophe.” A strong majority of Americans opposes going to war with Iran. Together, we must stop another war in the Middle East.

In 2018, Senator Tom Udall (D-NM), along with seven other senators, introduced legislation that will send a clear signal that Congress is re-asserting its Constitutional authority. The legislation, called the "Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act," requires the president to seek congressional approval for war, as required by the Constitution and the War Powers Act.  US Senators Tom Udall (D-NM), Richard J. Durbin (D-IL), and Rand Paul (R-KY), all members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, reintroduced bipartisan legislation on April 4, 2019.

Join us in calling on Congress to stand up against war with Iran by supporting this legislation. Clear congressional opposition to war would show that President Trump is isolated, and that he does not have America’s support. By taking a stand, Congress can promote a diplomatic solution like the Iran nuclear agreement, which Trump needlessly violated even though it prevents an Iranian nuclear bomb.

Under the US Constitution, only Congress can declare war. A war against Iran without congressional approval would be illegal, unconstitutional and a disaster for US national security. We urge Congress to send a clear message now that it opposes war with Iran.

Dear Member of Congress,

I urge you to stand up against war with Iran by supporting the "Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act of 2019."

Please lead the world toward a safer future, and reduce the threat posed by nuclear weapons to humanity, and to the survival of our nation.

Sincerely,
