MOX fuel plant has no customers

The Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel fabrication plant being built in South Carolina is over budget, nearly a decade behind schedule, and now has an ever bigger problem: no customers for its reactor fuel made from surplus weapons plutonium. “Taxpayers are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars a year into a facility that may never be used,” said Edwin Lyman, a nuclear expert at the Union of Concerned Scientists. “The pork barrel nature of this project has never been more evident.”
