The Pentagon wants to spend $1 trillion on new nuclear weapons over the next three decades. This is irresponsible, immoral and dangerous.
Our country is in economic distress. Instead of lavishing money on weapons to kill millions, our government should be helping to educate and employ millions. Worse, if we don't stop this nuclear spending spree, we won't just rob our future, we will trigger a new arms race that could destroy our future.
I was honored to be on the PBS Newshour last week. I joined former Defense Secretary Bill Perry and General James Cartwright, who used to oversee the US nuclear arsenal. We took a hard look at these plans. We all agreed that it was foolish to continue these cold war policies.
We need to act now. If we don't, defense contractors will lock in these programs for decades — a bloated nuclear arsenal with a trillion dollar price tag.
Ploughshares Fund and our grantees are committed to ending these dangerous plans. We know how to do it, but we need your help.
